All season long, the Power Couple will predict each week of the NFL season. Picks will be made against the spread, using the same lines posted over at ESPN’s Pigskin Pick’em game.
Thursday Night Football
Denver Broncos vs. San Diego Chargers (Chargers +3.5)
Max- Broncos: I just don’t see this Chargers losing streak ending anytime soon. Philip Rivers threw two picks against Oakland last weekend and Denver’s defense should give him fits. He may make enough throws to keep it close, but the Broncos will win this one.
Kelly – Chargers: Mike McCoy could be on his way out but one of these games has to break right for the Chargers – right? Besides, I just told you all how great Philip Rivers is, maybe he’ll put on a show for the national audience.
Sunday 1:00 p.m. ET Games
San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills (Bills -7.5)
Max- 49ers: Colin Kaepernick gets a big test in his return to the starter’s job. But even with Kaep back I can’t see this game being very exciting. Consider this a bet on the game being relatively close.
Kelly- 49ers: Is Buffalo good? After two weeks, I would have said no, but now, I’m not so sure. Still with that offense I wouldn’t put them ahead by more than 6 points, let alone basically 8.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Chicago Bears (Bears -2.5)
Max- Bears: Does anyone else think its weird that the Bears have looked better with Brian Hoyer at QB? I think Hoyer finds enough completions to beat a supbar Jaguars defense.
Kelly- Bears: Basically, what he said. Sorry Jay, I used to like you but it *gulp* looks like Brian Hoyer righted a sinking ship? I can’t believe I’m saying this.
Cincinnati Bengals vs. New England Patriots (Patriots -9.5)
Max- Patriots: I am not picking against the Patriots in Tom Terrific’s triumphant return to Foxboro. The Bengals had serious problems last weekend stopping Dallas and I can’t see them stopping Belichick and Brady.
Kelly- Patriots: As I said last week, never bet against Brady and I’m sticking to that. I think he’ll put on a show for the home crowd and I’m not sure the Bengals can handle that.
Cleveland Browns vs. Tennessee Titans (Titans -6.5)
Max- Titans: The Titans, buoyed by an improving defense and impressive running game, have been surprisingly competent the last few games. I think Marcus Mariota connects with Delanie Walker enough times to cover in this one.
Kelly- Titans: I was a little surprised by how high this line is, but then I realized that the Browns might be calling me up to play quarterback soon, so I can’t in my right mind take them.
Los Angeles Rams vs. Detroit Lions (Lions -3.5)
Max- Rams: Giving the Lions four points is too many for my taste. I think Aaron Donald bullies the Lions’ offensive line all day and keeps this one close.
Kelly- Rams: I think the Rams defense, especially their defensive line will give Matt Stafford fits all game. I’m just picturing Stafford on his back or running for his life the whole game, and that’s not a fun picture for the Lions.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Miami Dolphins (Dolphins +7.5)
Max- Steelers: I think Miami has no shot at stopping the Steelers’ offense.
Kelly- Steelers: This Pittsburgh offense should have no problem dropping 10 or more on the Dolphins. Sorry Miami.
Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints (Saints +2.5)
Max- Panthers: Cam has had a week off and the Panthers are due for a bounce-back game. Look for him to light up a bad Saints defense.
Kelly- Panthers: I’m not ready to buy in on the Saints just yet. I think Carolina is in a bit of a desperate situation and with Cam Newton and Jonathan Stewart supposedly ready for this game, I think they might be primed and ready.
Baltimore Ravens vs. New York Giants (Giants -2.5)
Max- Giants: I’m tempted to pick the Ravens, but after their questionable decision last week (what was that fake field goal?) I can’t. The Giants have too many offensive weapons and I think they start to figure out how to use them this weekend.
Kelly- Ravens: Marty Morhinweg was fun – at least I thought so – in his one year with the Jets and I’m curious to see what he can do with Joe Flacco. The Giants, who I was quite high on to start the year, have let me down and I think the slide continues.
Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins (Redskins +1.5)
Max- Eagles: The Wentz wagon hit a small bump in the road last weekend, but look for it to get back on track here against a terrible Washington defense.
Kelly- Eagles: I’m so out on the Redskins this year. They should have lost that game to the Ravens last week at least three different times, but they pulled out a tight win. Not this time boys.
4:00 p.m. ET Games
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders (Raiders -1.5)
Max- Raiders: I’m not totally sold on the Raiders just yet, but I’ve been very impressed by a number of Derek Carr throws the past few weeks. Alex Smith doesn’t scare me enough to believe the Chiefs can win this road game.
Kelly- Raiders: While like Max, I have my questions about the Raiders, they seem to do poorly against strong, powerful offenses led by dynamic quarterbacks. That’s not what the Chiefs are so I think Oakland will do just fine.
Atlanta Falcons vs. Seattle Seahawks (Seahawks -6.5)
Max- Seahawks: The Falcons have been the second most impressive team in the league thus far this season, but I can’t pick against the Seahawks when they play at home. As good as it looked against Denver, I’m not sure Atlanta’s defense can get enough stops against Russell Wilson.
Kelly- Falcons: I’m riding this Falcons team until they let me down. They took down the Broncos last week, somehow without a big day from Julio Jones. While he has a tough matchup this week, I don’t think he can stay invisible for long.
Dallas Cowboys vs. Green Bay Packers (Packers -4.5)
Max- Packers: I think the Packers sell out to stop Ezekiel Elliott and make Dak Prescott beat them. I don’t think Dak, as strong as he’s played so far, can do that just yet. Give me Aaron Rodgers at home.
Kelly- Packers: If this game was in Dallas, maybe I would consider the Cowboys, but Green Bay at home is as close to a lock as you can get at this point. I think Aaron Rodgers reminds the Dallas defense that they’ve been playing above their usual average and they come back to earth here.
Sunday Night Football
Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans (Texans -3.5)
Max- Texans: The Colts are bad. Even without JJ Watt, Texans defenders will be in Andrew Luck’s face all game long. Hey Brock Osweiler, here’s a primetime chance to show you deserve your $72 million contract.
Kelly- Texans: For the division! And I think the Texans might have it…I feel bad for Andrew Luck. I don’t think he’s going to have an easy night.
Monday Night Football
New York Jets vs. Arizona Cardinals (Cardinals -7.5)
Max- Cardinals: I think both of these teams are better than their records would indicate. Arizona needs a win here to stay in the playoff picture and the Jets have not looked good the last two weeks. Their offense has sputtered and their defense, supposedly their calling card, has given up a combined 48 points the past two weeks. Give me the rested Cardinals.
Kelly- Jets: For some reason, I just can’t give up on the Jets. I keep talking myself into scenarios where they can keep this season alive, despite the injuries and their atrocious 1-4 start. For some reason, I keep believing. Maybe this day they’ll prove me right.
Bye week: Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
